RECTOR'S
WEEKLY LETTER
14th (?) May-1940
Editorial
In order to make the News Letter still more interesting the Rector
has asked Mr. Goring of Hesketh Bank C. E. Schools, and Mr. Rymer
Headmaster of Hoole C.E. Schools, and Mr Goodall, the Rector of
Bretherton and Mr Magrath, Rector of Rufford, to supply him with
news items from those parishes that would be of interest to the
Tarleton lads. They are sending their news each week to the Rector
for his news letter. We thank them for their kindness and interest.
No
Whitsunday Procession.
The police would not let us have our usual WhitSunday procession
round the parish, so in its place the Hesketh Bank Band played in
the Churchyard, before going into the Church for the Service.
Local
Defence Volunteers.
At a meeting held in the British Legion Club over 60 men, mostly
ex-servicemen, joined the L.D.V. The Rector took the Chair and explained
its purpose and, on behalf of the British Legion offered the Club
Room for a depot.
On
Leave.
Again this week we have had only one lad home on leave; this was
Kenneth Robshaw, Loyal Regt, after innoculatlon. Johnny Hague has
been home for the last two Sundays looking very smart in a Petty
Officer's uniform; he expects to be appointed to a ship any day
when he will be away for a considerable time. Eric Hind D.L.I. has
been in hospital with a bad foot.
Addresses.
Please notify the Rector at once when you change your address, otherwise
you might miss the magazine and the letter and also much else. If
you want to know the address of any particular Tarleton lad write
to the Rector and he will send it on.
Field
Days.
As far as is at present arranged both the Church and the Chapel
are having their Field days as usual; Church on June 8th, Chapel
June 15th. There will probably be no processions but Silcocks are
coming to both. British Legion Carnival will be held on a smaller
scale, and the Rector is trying to get Arthur Askey (Big Hearted
Arthur) to crown the Queen.
Call
Up
Tom Harrison (Kearsley Ave.) joins the R.A. Signals on Thursday
this week. John Moss has medical board on Friday.
Lighter
Side.
Scene - Hefty Recruit on parade trying to button up battle dress
much too small for him.
Officer - Come, come, my man smarten yourself up, do you realise
that you are now nearing the King's uniform,
Recruit - So that's why the wretched thing won't fit me.
Hesketh
Bank News.
Up to date over 30 lads have joined, the Colours from H.B. Proceeds
of Dances at H.B. for the Comforts Fund have exceeded £15.
Many couples even nerved a Waltzing Competition at these dances.
Fermor
Hesketh Football.
Eight teams competed this year. Banks provided winning team defeating
Fulwood by 2 goals to 1. Medals were presented by Miss W. Alty.
Harry Scrambler and Douglas Iddon collected £3 on field for
Comforts Fund.
H.B. is running three Cricket teams this season. First team beat
Red Triangle 75 for 5 on Whit-Saturday.
Letters
Received
Owing to present circumstances fewer letters have been received
this week. However, George West (B.E.F.), Ernie Ball, Dan Stazicker,
and Noel Clarke, (B.E.F.) have written.
Rector's
Letter
My dear Lads,
Just a few personal words from me to you. During the past sixteen
years I have watched you all grow up, I have never differentiated
between Church and Chapel for I have regarded you all as my own
lads. And I am very proud of you. I have loved you all and I hope
that when you return, which I sincerely pray may be soon, that you
will remember that the Church never for one moment forgot you when
you were away, but stretched out to the four corners of the world
to keep you in close remembrance before the Throne of God with ceaseless
prayers. May God bless you all and keep you safe.
Numbers
growing.
Sixty two of our Tarleton lads have now joined up, so that means
that the Rector sends out sixty two letters every week. He also
sends one to the Bishop and also to the Rector of Bretherton, Mr.
Goring, Mr. Rymer and Mr. Magrath.
Prayer
for this week
Give unto us, O Lord, the Spirit of brightness and courage. Help
us to help others to face courageously whatever to-morrow may bring
to them. Let not shadows opress our spirits lest our gloom should
darken the light by which others have to live. Say unto our souls,
"Be of good. courage, fear not, for I am with thee." Grant
this, 0 Lord, of thy mercy, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
Taxi
Drivers.
Lads from Hoole, Tarleton, Hesketh Bank and Rufford who are stranded
at Preston when coming on leave should ring up the Rector (Telephone
230 Hesketh Bank) and if he is not in Mr. Robert Rowland. (Tel 306
H.B.) and they will be fetched.

Wounded.
Willie Jackson of Longton, cousin of Jack Robinson, is now back
in England in a military hospital with a wound in his foot. He is
doing nicely.
Registering
on Saturday.
Amongst those who will be registering on Saturday next (although
there may be more) are James Howard; Harold Aspey; Harry Latham
(Hesketh Lane); John Rowland; Matt Sutton and Harry Harrison (Hesketh
Lane).
