From
the Reader
Dear friends,
Please note the subtle difference at the head of this
page. It’s not that Fr Nicholas forgot he had to
write his letter before he went on holiday – he
was just so busy organising the Young People’s Barbecue!
This was a real success – see the report elsewhere
in this issue.
He
has told us how much he enjoyed Old Church Sunday –
and so did those of us who listened to his hints, went
to Evensong, and then heard his invitation to an open
evening at the Rectory. Great fun was had by all, not
least by those clustered round the piano.
Another
success was that nearly 300 people visited St Mary’s
during the two Heritage Open Days – a fuller report
and thanks, with a heartfelt appeal, are also in this
edition of the magazine.
Some
explanation of the new form of the pewsheet or weekly
bulletin may be helpful. Fr Nicholas has combined the
events section with what we used to list as “commemorations”
– thoughts about Christians of the past. Not all
of these will now get a mention – though the full
list continues in the printed magazine – and he
has added for each weekday the Eucharistic readings and
a prayer intention. Some people may find it helpful to
use these readings with their daily prayers, and certainly
include the intentions so we all pray together for the
same things.
As a bit of jargon busting: Festival celebrates a major
saint eg the Disciples or St Mary; Memorial is for a less
well known traditional saint; Commemoration is for even
less well known traditional saints and for those people
the Church of England has added to its ‘Sanctorale’
or list of Christians who are good examples to us; Ember
days are for prayer for vocations; Rogation days are prayer
for seedtime and harvest. Ferial (from Greek) means ‘none
of the above’ or ‘ordinary days’ –
tho’ remember the bishop who said “There is
no such thing as ‘ordinary time.’
God
be with you

energetic enthusiasts responded to Father Nicholas’s
invitation to the Rectory. The evening passed quickly
with Badminton, Boules, Table-tennis, Pool, Quizzes, chatter,
fruit punch and food. A hotly contested Chocolate Challenge
finished the evening. Thank you Father Nicolas and your
helpers. Please – what’s next?
HERITAGE OPEN DAYS at St Mary’s
Thank
you to all of you who helped with “Church Sitting”
at St Mary’s for Heritage Open Days: Jean and Keith
Greaves, Margaret Latham, Dorothy Hewitson, Lilian Whyte,
Dorothy Redfern, Marilyn Prayle, Pat and John Heap, John
Spencer, George Maughan, Winnie Turner, Evelyn Johnson,
Brenda and Brian Butler, Julie and Fran, and Tom and Mary
Melling. Without you all St Mary’s could not have
open for the 2 days.
My
thanks also go to John Spencer, Belle Fairbrother, Mrs
Webster, and David Johnson for providing the photographs,
and also to Agnes Travis and Mary Melling for the lovely
flower arrangements. Also The Hosanna Singers, Angela
Abram, Alan Rimmer, Barbara Vickers, and Father Tom, who
all gave us a treat with their singing or playing the
organ or the cornet.
About
300 people came to the Heritage Open days, which is a
grand achievement for us all. The people who did pass
comments to me all enjoyed what was down there for them
to see.
I
have to report that we have had some more of Rector
Forse’s letters stolen. 15 copies were taken
last year, and four more were taken this year, even though
we had a notice to ask people not to remove them from
the church. [See # below] I do not know if we will be
able to put them on show again.
My
thanks once more for all your help.

Bank Monday Holiday Walk
A
select group of eight set out from St Mary the Virgin,
Eccleston, in light rain to walk up the water meadows
of the Yarrow, almost immediately putting up a heron.
This section of the walk is part of the Eccleston Millennium
Walk, so most – though not all – of the many
stiles were in good condition. There was one muddy jump
over a side stream before we crossed the Yarrow and still
under cloud but now dry we pulled up the valley side past
the fenced off remains of Bradley Hall to reach Red Lane.
A road stroll brought us to an excellent lunch at the
Original Farmers Arms, after which two left us for other
commitments.
In bright sun we set off down Towngate to Anchorfields
(a housing development on the site of the former Blue
Anchor pub) where we picked up a field path across to
Syd Brook Lane. We’d already seen blackberries coming
into season, and here, by the Syd Brook, we saw haws and
elderberries –a gift for those who like food for
free or make homemade wines. Fr Nicholas drove past and
waved as we walked Syd Brook Lane – the only section
of the walk in Croston – down to Croston Mill, where
we came back alongside the Yarrow and crossed back into
Eccleston. Martins wheeled over head, and the later sandbank
where I had seen them nesting when I did the recce walk
was now deserted as all the broods were flying. Butterflies
thronged to the bright yellow weeds and the church appeared
and disappeared ahead as we wove along the bank, back
to the bridge and our cars.
Next walk? This year’s end both Christmas and New
Years Day fall on Sundays, so we have the choice of either
Tuesday 27th December (St John’s Day) or Monday
2nd January. Watch this space!

Jerusalem!
On Tuesday 13th September Fr Tom opened choir practice
by telling us to turn to hymn 33, and we blasted out Blake’s
Jerusalem to Parry’s tune.
“We’re not singing it this Sunday: I just
felt like playing it after the Ashes result.”
June’s
Biscuit recipe
At the summer Sunday coffee sessions in the Parish Room,
people kept asking June Taylor for her biscuit recipe.
Here it is!
Ingredients:
to make 48 biscuits
8 oz Marge
6 oz Sugar
10 oz Self-raising flour
1 Egg
2/3 drops Almond essence
2 Handfuls cornflakes
Procedure:
1. Grease oven trays.
2. Crush cornflakes in a polythene bag.
3. Cream marge and sugar.
4. Add the egg and almond essence.
5. Stir in flour and mix until it all comes together.
6. Put the biscuit mixture in a polythene bag and let
it cool in the fridge for about 1 hour.
7. Make into small balls and gently roll in the crushed
cornflakes.
8. Put onto the greased trays and press gently to flatten
the balls.
9. Bake at 180 for about 15 -16 minutes.
10. Cool biscuits on a wire tray.
Did you hear about …
The American tourist to the Holy Land who said he’d
learnt such a lot from his visit. “I now know that
Sodom and Gomorrah are places, and not husband and wife
like Dan & Beersheba.”
Talking
about parish clergy on holiday …
Did
you hear about the priest standing in for a vicar on holiday?
He collared the warden after the service to say “I’m
never coming here again.”
“Why not?” asked the baffled warden.
“Look at this on the pew sheet: ‘While I’m
on holiday, the visiting preachers can be found pinned
to the vestry door.’”
A
tall tale from the confessional
Father
O’Brien was getting on and had become quite deaf.
In order to avoid embarrassment, he came to an arrangement
with his penitents that rather than shout their misdemeanours
into his failing hearing, they should write them out on
a piece of paper and slip it through the grill.
One
day he was presented with a rather odd list:
“A piece of beef; 2 lbs of onions; potatoes; baked
beans; eggs; butter; sliced loaf; shampoo; toilet rolls.”
Puzzled,
he passed it back through the grill and then easily heard
the shout: “Mother of God, I’ve left me sins
in Sainsbury’s.”

Jonah
as Edgar Marriott might have written him …
There
once was a prophet called Jonah
Who were sittin’ wi’ nowt much to do,
When God said “Get over to Nineveh, lad,
‘Cos the folks are a right rotten crew;
I want you to talk to ‘em sharply,
Persuade ‘em from me to repent,
And then, though I really should punish ‘em all,
I might change me mind and relent.”

The
Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform
your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light,
and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way
we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves,
in one another, and in the world. Amen
