Ecumenical Walk of Witness
Rose Queen & Field Day
From
the Rectory
Dear
Friends,
June
is always a busy month in Tarleton, with Walking Day,
Rose Queen Day and our Feast of Title to look forward
to. This year Trinity Sunday falls on the 11th and I am
delighted that Canon Bill Riley will be with us at the
10.30 am Eucharist. As you will have gathered, I was on
my post Easter break when the last parish magazine was
being compiled and so before we embark on this busy month
I would like to pause and take stock of a few things.
As
Lent was beginning, we spent a period of time considering
the financial health of our church and were challenged
to take a fresh look at our personal stewardship. I am
very heartened that many responded positively to the campaign
– there has been a significant increase in pledged
income, standing orders and gift aided stewardship. However
I was a little concerned on Pledge Sunday when we were
thirty communicants down on normal - perhaps it was just
because of the snow? I do hope so, because I know how
uncomfortable people can feel at the mention of money.
But without our financial support the work of the church
at local, diocesan and national level would simply grind
to a halt. We have made up some of our shortfall but by
no means all of it. I hope and pray that we can all work
together for the good of God’s kingdom so that these
concerns can be put behind us.
Apart
from Pledge Sunday, the rest of Lent and Holy Week were,
on the whole, well observed in the parish. It was a joy
and a privilege for me to commemorate and celebrate the
events of our Lord’s Passion and Resurrection with
you for the first time in Tarleton. Holy Week was exhausting
but very rewarding. The children’s work and the
Easter Vigil were particular highlights.
Following
on from Lent I am continuing the weekly Thursday evening
Eucharist at 7.00pm which was well supported during Lent.
Please do come along if you can.
I
believe that it is important that worship and prayers
for God’s people and this parish are offered more
frequently in our parish church. Prayer, Holy Scripture
and the Eucharist should be central to and are essential
for the life of a Christian. Through our worship, God
can make a real difference to our lives and the lives
of those around us. If you find it hard to pray alone
at home – then make the small effort to come to
Church more often. It is amazing what God can do if we
allow ourselves to take those few steps towards him.
With my prayers and best wishes,
Fr Nicholas.

APCM
Our Annual Meetings first unanimously re-elected Brian
Butler and Keith Greaves as Wardens. They noted that under
the current rules they would have to retire in two years
at most, and that one of them would retire next year to
allow for an orderly changeover.
The PCC required four people for a full three years and
one casual vacancy for one year. Proposed were: (in alphabetical
order) Irene Baybutt, David Bromilow; Elsie Lathom, and
Dorothy Redfern. The meeting unanimously agreed to accept
them and leave the casual vacancy open.
Sides-people were re-elected en bloc.
The Rector commented on how close to real life in the
parish was our description for the vacancy and how much
he was enjoying being with us.
Beryl Baldwin and Jim Aldridge were re-elected as PCC
Secretary and Treasurer respectively at a short PCC meeting
immediately after the APCM

TARLETON ECUMENICAL WALK OF WITNESS Saturday 10th
June 2006
The
service on the school field will start at 2 p.m. followed
by the Walk of Witness. It is hoped that as many organisations
as possible will interpret the theme in some way.
Maypole
and Morris Dancing will take place on Holy Trinity School
field after the procession along with informal races and
games. Afternoon Tea will be served from the School Hall
for a nominal charge of £1 for adults, children
free, and may be eaten either in the Hall or on the field.
There
will be a vintage ‘bus in the procession again this
year for anyone who would like to ride.
CAN
YOU HELP?
I
am compiling a book for our Church about the last 40 years
of our Rose Queens.
It
will have photographs and names of everyone for each year.
I have made a start on it and I have been given photographs
of the majority of the Queens and the book is coming along
fine. But I would be very grateful for any information
about who were in the retinues from 1966 until 1975. Were
they Petal Throwers, Crown Bearers, Heralds, Sword Bearers,
Attendants? Or maybe they crowned the Queen Florence Pilkington
1966 or Pat Singleton 1967.
If
you can help please get in touch with me.

ROSE
QUEEN CROWNING AND FIELD DAY
How fast this year seems to have gone. It is nearly time
for my daughter Vicki to hand over to the new Rose Queen.
Both Vicki and her retinue are immensely enjoying representing
their Church and Sunday School.
On Saturday 24th June the Rose Queen elect, Holly Hodgkins,
will be crowned by her Grandma, Mrs Joan Hodgkins. Sue,
Holly’s Mum, is working very hard to ensure all
the retinue looks stunning and I know they will. It would
be lovely to see everyone on the day. The crowning ceremony
starts at 2.00 pm with the parade of visiting Queens.
All afternoon there will be delightful stalls to tempt
you with: homemade cakes; fresh, locally grown fruit and
veg; mouth-watering strawberries and cream; delicious
hotdogs; and also a good choice of plants to buy, pony
rides, coconut shy, archery, fairground rides, bouncy
castle, hair braiding, football game and face painting
to keep the children entertained. Pick up a bargain at
the White Elephant stall and try your luck by buying a
raffle ticket. If you are a little thirsty or (hopefully)
need cooling down with an ice cream, the pop, ice cream
and candy floss stall will be your next place to call.
In the school hall, you will be able to admire the high
standards of children from our three primary schools in
the art and craft competition, whilst enjoying a good
cup of tea and scrumptious homemade cakes.
Please try to come along to Tarleton Holy Trinity Primary
School on Saturday 24th June for a 2.00pm start. Entrance
is £1 Adults and accompanied children go free. If
the weather is bad, the crowning will take place in church
and the stalls and entertainment in the school.

MAYDAY WORSHIP and WALK
As the May Day bank holiday Monday really was the 1st
this year, it was also the Saints’ day of SS Philip
and James. So before our cluster Informal Walking Group
set off for the walk many of us remembered those Saints’
by worshipping in St Mary’s Old Church, where The
Rev. Tom Taylor celebrated the Eucharist with a congregation
of twenty.
Some who worshipped weren’t walking, and some walkers
arrived after the service, but it was still twenty who
lined up outside to be photographed before setting off.
After passing Bank Hall, we zigzagged through the lanes
and paths of Bretherton before moving on into Hoole, with
lunch at The Black Horse. A different route through Bretherton
brought us back via Bank Hall once more. The cold wind
didn’t damp the walkers’ spirits and many
said they would come again on Monday 29th, when the start
is again in Tarleton from outside Holy Trinity. Walkers
came from all three parishes and from as far afield as
Ingol.

The
Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform
your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light,
and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way
we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves,
in one another, and in the world. Amen

PARISH
JOTTINGS FOR JUNE 1891
Cold
weather and east winds have marked the month of May this
year, and even the close of the month showered hail and
snow upon us, freezing the early potatoes, and blighting
the blossom of much of our stone fruit and some of our
pear trees, while sickness of various kinds has been more
prevalent than in winter.
The
Children’s Society: Children in prison
• 28 Children have committed suicide in custody
since 1990
• Almost 3000 children are locked up right now
• 50% of children held in prison before trial are
found not guilty or receive a non-custodial sentence
• In 2003/4, 3337 children identified as vulnerable
to suicide, self-harm and victimisation are still in prison
Your gifts help the Children’s Society to help these
young people who have been abandoned by everyone else:
help keep them out of prison, out of trouble, get them
back to a normal life.
