The
Parish Church of
HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish
"Webzine" October 2006
Dear
Friends,
Public
worship and private prayer are the bread and butter of
the Christian life. God calls us to draw close to him
through Word and Sacrament, and whereas he never abandons
us, we may often find our selves too busy to keep our
side of the Covenant. And so for centuries Christian men
and women have sought to renew their relationship with
God through making pilgrimage.
A
pilgrimage is not just a physical journey to a holy place,
it is a spiritual journey which may throw up new challenges
and help us discover God in new ways. As well as a time
for worship and reflection, pilgrimages are also a time
to relax and socialise. For some time now, I have felt
that a Parish Pilgrimage would be an excellent opportunity
for us to take a break from the normal pattern of life,
so that we as individuals and as a Church might be able
to take stock of where we are now and open ourselves to
God, so that we may better grow into the Christian Community
he wills us to be.
Having
had a word with Fr Tom and Canon Jim at Rufford, we thought
a trip to the Norfolk Village of Walsingham would be a
good idea. Walsingham is a beautiful medieval village
with many half timbered houses, a graceful parish Church,
and a handful of good ‘watering-holes.’ But
unlike any other English village, Walsingham has been
a national centre for pilgrimage since 1061. At the heart
of the village is the Holy House, a tiny chapel within
the Shrine Church. Reconstructed exactly 75 years ago
by the local vicar, Alfred Hope-Patten, the present day
Holy House is England’s Nazareth, a reminder to
us of the simple home where Mary first said ‘yes’
to the Angel’s message that’s he was to be
the mother of God’s Son. It is a place where many
pilgrims have found peace and healing, and where many
pilgrims have found the courage to say their own ‘yes’
to God.
The
dates provisionally booked are 26th - 28th October 2007.
Do consider coming along - have a word with me or Fr Tom
if you want to know more.
With
love and prayers,
Fr Nicholas

Child
Protection
We have arranged for Susan Witts, the Diocesan Children’s
Work Adviser, to come to Tarleton on Monday 13th November
at 7.15 p.m. in school to speak on this emotive issue.
The invitation to come along is extended to everyone who
is interested. It is a requirement that anyone working
with children within the Parish is aware of issues relating
to children’s safety and a certificate of attendance
will be given to everyone who attends. The subject is
not an easy one, but Susan makes the evening very interesting
and informative. The date seems a long time away, but
it will creep up on us, so please make a note in your
diary and let me know as soon as possible if you would
like to come along.

Heritage
Weekend at St Mary’s
A very special ‘thank you’ must go to Gail
Sutton for the excellent exhibition of the many photos
of Tarleton and District, the copies of the Parish magazine,
and the complete history of the Rose Queens.
It has taken many months of work and was very much appreciated
by the many visitors over the weekend.
Thanks also to the organists and volunteers who helped
make it a memorable visit for so many people from outside
the parish.
A thankful parishioner.
Heritage
Open days at St Mary’s Church
May I take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped
in anyway down at St Mary’s Church for the Heritage
Open Days.
Father Nicholas, Father Tom, Angela Abram and Norma Roberts
provided the music.
People who ‘church sat’ were Brenda Barker,
Tom and Mary Melling, Margaret Richardson, John and Pat
Heap, George Maughan, Brenda and Brian Butler, Winnie
Turner, Evelyn Johnson, Dorothy Huartson, Doris Ascroft,
Dorothy Redfern and John Spencer.
The people who provided photographs - that everyone enjoyed
- were Jimmy Harrison, John Spencer, Margaret Webster,
Belle Fairbrother, Agnes Travis, Doris Ascroft, Raymond
Golifer, and Mrs Pownall.
Agnes Travis provided all the flowers.
Without you all St Mary’s couldn’t have been
opened for the two days - and if I’ve missed any
names I am very sorry.
200 people came and those who passed comments all enjoyed
the photographs and would like more next year!
My thanks again to all who helped.

Bank Holiday Walk
Nineteen of us assembled in Burscough under scudding clouds.
We included some from each of the three parishes, plus
some who had been with us before from farther away, and
two friends of one of our regular walkers with us for
the first time. ‘Blustery showers‘ were forecast
but we had alternate dry cloud and sun as we set off through
Burscough towards Martin Mere. Footpath no 23 (by the
railway) had not been cleared of rampant blackberry arches,
so we used plan B and had a quiet nose at front gardens
before we emerged into the fields and Crabtree Lane. The
WWT have not been able to divert the footpath past their
extension and we took the old right of way rather than
the new permissive path - which we will use another time.
This path was full of dragonflies - we’ve never
seen so many at once. Just after we’d crossed the
railway the Red Arrows flew over, lining up for Southport,
and turned on their coloured smoke as they went.
Lunch at the Martin Inn took longer than expected, as
they had equipment problems in the kitchen, but the food
was good once it arrived.
After lunch the stroll back down the canal was free of
fishermen (unlike the day before) and we admired the passing
boats and resisted the temptation to stop at either of
the intermediate pubs along the bank.

October 1886
The foundation stone was laid for Holy Trinity.

October 1888
Confirmation by Bishop Cramer Roberts of almost 50 young
people took place. Oh that they may “be no more
children carried about with every blast of vain doctrine.”
Oh that they may “hold fast their professions without
wavering.” Brethren, pray for them, and for all.
Oh that every soul in this parish were truly given to
God.

The
Mission Action Plan Prayer
God of new beginnings, we pray that you will transform
your church as you renew us by your love.
Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light,
and live increasingly by faith.
Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way
we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves,
in one another, and in the world. Amen
