The

HOLY TRINITY, TARLETON
Parish
"Webzine" July 2007
From
the Rectory July 2007
Dear
friends,
The
month of June is always a busy one in Tarleton. This year
it began with our feast of title, Holy Trinity Sunday,
when I was delighted to bless the new Trinity icon which
has been given by a former Rose Queen, Vicki Rimmer, and
her retinue. If you missed the service when I preached
on the symbolism in the painting, then do please pick
up a leaflet from church which helps to explain it all.
Walking
Day this year was excellent. Really good weather and,
more importantly, a really good turn out from the local
churches. Thank you to all those who worked so hard behind
the scenes, and to all who joined the procession or lined
the pavements as we made our act of witness. The band
members must be made of strong stuff to march and play
in that heat - all credit to them. It was wonderful to
have the entertainment and games on the field in the afternoon.
I was even persuaded to try and ride the impossible topsy-turvy
bicycle, which occasioned an impromptu outing of my knees,
much to the amusement of many!
The
middle of the month saw 29 candidates from the cluster
confirmed at the hands of Bishop John. There was a wonderful
atmosphere in church and at the reception afterwards.
Please continue to pray for the newly confirmed, and take
time to reflect on your own commitment to Christ and how
you might best serve him. The Eucharists during the week
particularly provide opportunity to think and pray. Why
not come along?
As
I write I am looking forward to the Rose Queen Field Day,
when we celebrate the work done by Hollie Hodgkins and
her helpers as her year of office draws to a close and
we welcome Erin Lynd as she is crowned our new Rose Queen
for 2007/8. We wish Erin all the best for her year of
office.
Mercifully
the July calendar is less punishing, though there are
several events to look out for in the magazine.
One final advanced notice: the date for my licensing at
Rufford has been pencilled in for 7.30pm on 6th August
(feast of the Transfiguration). I really appreciate your
support as the two churches begin to work more closely
together and it would be heartening to have Tarleton well
represented at this occasion.
With
my prayers and best wishes,
Fr
Nicholas

Mothers’ Union July
The
Bring and Buy Sale which we held in May was very successful
and as we received several donations and an amount from
our Members’ Week, we have been able to send £100
to the Mothers’ Union Literacy and Development Project.
This programme helps break the cycle of illiteracy and
poverty. Working where the need is greatest, it empowers
women and men, building on their experience and skills,
to become leaders in their communities, to find jobs,
and to develop projects that benefit communities and their
own families. It operates in 13 dioceses in such countries
as Burundi, Malawi, and Sudan.
Thank you for your generous support.
On
Monday 2nd July there will be a Prayer Meeting in the
Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 2.0 pm and our final meting
before the summer break will bean evening meal at the
Rufford Arms Hotel on Wednesday July 11th, arriving about
7.00 pm for 7.3- pm. Hope to see you then.
With
love and best wishes for the summer break.

All welcome either in the morning or the afternoon.
Thank
you I would like to say a big thank you to Gail, Jimmy,
George, Jim, Allan and anyone else not mentioned for keeping
the Churchyard immaculate. It is very much appreciated.

Ecumenical Walk of Witness
Didn’t
we have a lovely day on the 9th June this year!!! Of course,
it would be nothing without the bustle of preparation,
the anticipation about the weather, and this year, whether
Carr Lane would be open!
Thank
you to everyone who made any contribution to the success
of the day – there are too many to mention but the
small group of people from the four Churches do very much
appreciate everything you do – thank you.
Thank
you to everyone for trying the new hymn – for joining
in the procession as a sign of our unified witness to
God – and for watching as we pass; to the children
for joining in the races and the grown ups for trying
to ride the bike!
The
tradition of ‘Tea Party Day’ holds many happy
memories and I hope it will continue in Tarleton for many
years – I am sure with the help and support we have
received particularly this year, that it will.
God
bless and thank you

News
from the school
We
have had an exciting month with the new extension nearly
completed. (Hopefully when you read this, it will already
be in use and Sunday morning coffee can resume in the
hall!) We said farewell to Mrs Gray at the beginning of
June by having a service and, at the children's suggestion,
a "bit of a party".
We
hope to gain our "Green Flag" award soon. This
is awarded to the school that proves they are working
hard not only to reduce, re-use and recycle, but are also
seeking ways to use less energy (electricity, that is
not the children's!), less water, and to seek further
ways to become a sustainable school. Mrs Wilcox has worked
hard with the Eco-committee and the whole of the school
towards achieving this award. In fact the other day when
the children were researching some history about school
life, the question occurred about the 3R's. One child
instantly put up his hand and announced they were reduce,
reuse and recycle! How times have changed.
A
number of children were also confirmed in June and we
continue to encourage all the children in their journey
of faith.
God's
blessings to you all,
Sue.

Holy
Trinity Sunday School
As we come to the end of the School year, we
would like to invite everyone to come to our Annual Thank
You service in School on Sunday 8th July 2007 commencing
at 10.15 a.m. in the School Hall and finishing in time
to go into Church at the Peace. This is the occasion when
we thank all the children for taking part in the Walk
of Witness, Rose Queen, Morris Dancing and Maypole and
other occasions over the past twelve months. We have a
short service, are entertained by the dancers and give
out certificates – amongst other little bits and
pieces!
This
will be our last Sunday School before the summer holidays
as the following Sunday will be the Family Eucharist.
We will start back again on Sunday 9th September 2007
and will be commencing at 10.30 a.m. in line with the
changed time of the start of the Eucharist. We will, therefore,
be finishing at about 11.20 a.m. in time to go into Church
for the Peace.
May
I take this opportunity of thanking everyone for their
support and look forward to seeing all the children in
September and hopefully some new faces – do YOU
know anyone who would like to come along – sometimes
they just need asking!!

Informal
Walking Group: Whit Monday Walk
The
fires of Pentecost were not too visible this Whit Monday.
At Hay-on-Wye, the R4 Today presenter was complaining
of how cold his tent was. At Walsingham, the festival
procession was called off because of the wind and rain
and it was ‘if wet, in the parish church’
and not all could get in. But as we assembled at St Mary
the Virgin, Rufford, the wind was sneakily cold but dry
and it stayed that way all morning.
Twenty
one folks set out and we strolled along the canal path
behind Rufford Old Hall before cutting back to the A59
and beginning to cross the moss. The morning’s walk
was a little longer than usual, but we had some fit and
fast walkers with us. As we tacked across the moss on
paths and tracks, Trinity’s spire veered from left
to right without apparently getting any bigger! We were
met at the Cock & Bottle by two more, one of whom
was to return with us.
After
lunch, we set off back to the canal at Bank Bridge. The
churchyard volunteers were cutting the grass and St Mary’s
was open, so we took the opportunity to let people look
inside. As we followed the sinuous old river bank to the
bridge at Sollom, the clouds built from behind, and at
the stop lock, rain started. But we were all equipped
for this weather and carried on: it blew over by the time
we got to Spark Bridge on the Croston road. Indeed, the
sun came out and by the time we back at Rufford, we were
quite hot.

Venture
out for TLM
On Saturday 9th June I got up early to get the coach for
Whithorn on a pilgrimage to St Ninian’s cave in
the borders of Scotland. It was a wonderful day and although
the coach was late most of the party walked the 2½
miles to the cave where we had a picnic and held a short
act of service before walking 2½ miles back to
the car park. From there we were ferried in the mini bus
to the Isle of Whithorn and later to the Abbey for another
service in the abbey ruins before getting the coach back
home.
It
was a very long but enjoyable day and I learnt a lot about
a saint who many people had never heard of. He was apparently
born in Cumbria and founded the Abbey at Whithorn in later
life after spending many years in France. I also discovered
that among many others, Robert the Bruce suffered from
Leprosy and went to Whithorn to seek a cure.

PINOCCHIO
By Carlo Collodi, adapted by Gareth Machin
Saturday 4th August 2007
"Outdoor
promenade theatre is become something of an English theatre
tradition."
The wonderful adventures of Pinocchio, one of the best
loved children's characters of all time, will be brought
to life in Williamson Park for the Dukes' 21st annual
outdoor walkabout theatre extravaganza.
But
be warned! These are not the sugared Disney stories of
Pinocchio - these are toe-curling tales, told with such
glorious mischief that you'll grin with delight and grimace
with pleasurable terror. Recommended for adventurous adults
and brave children over 5.
Difficult terrain in places, and warm clothing essential.
Picnics for the interval recommended!
Approx.
cost: £25 including coach, leaving Tarleton at 6
p.m. Please put your name on the list at the back of Church
today if you wish to go!!
The
Big Day Out
Saturday 9th June was also the day chosen by the diocese
for its ‘Big Day Out.’ Because it was walking
day, I represented the whole parish on my own. The Big
Day Out took the form of an outdoor Eucharist with a lunch
break between the ministry of the word and the ministry
of the sacrament. It’s certainly the first time
I’ve slapped on sun blocker half way through a service!
I had had serious reservations about the original proposal,
but on the day, and helped by the gorgeous weather, the
event was highly successful. Around 600 people attended,
plus the working team for the day of around 100. The keynote
speaker was Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Reading. Stephen
came fresh from his appearances on the front page of the
Times, Today, and radio talk shows from as far away as
New Zealand. All this was because of his stunt standing
on Reading station at the height of the rush hour handing
out egg timers with the phrase ’Here’s a gift
of time.’ This was partly in connection with his
new book “Do Nothing - to change your life”
which is a plea to step away from over-busyness and take
a pause.
He led us through a number of thought pieces for discussion,
centring on how we react as Christians when people want
us to talk about our faith. Three thoughts from him stick
in my head: “The main task of the clergy is to teach
people about prayer.” “Of course we want more
people to come to church, but how would you react if a
coach load turned up - and some sat where you usually
do?” “Prayer is not about changing the mind
of God, but about aligning ourselves with his mind.”
We also rededicated ourselves to our Christian ministry.
First; all of us;
then the licensed lay ministers, including Readers;
finally the ordained.
This chimed well with what Bishop John preached at the
confirmation, and Fr Tom echoed on the following Sunday:
we are all showing forth our faith by word and action.

The
re-commitment to ministry at The Big Day Out
We,
the whole people of God,
commit ourselves to supporting each other in our ministries
through prayer, through loving service, and through the
giving of our resources, talents and time, to participate
in God’s mission to the world, and to build up the
body of Christ.
