The
Icon of the Holy Trinity

More
about the Icon
The
original Iconographer Rublev used the story from Genesis
18.8, sometimes called The Hospitality of Abraham, when
Abraham was visited by three angels, as a way of representing
the Holy Trinity.
All
scholars agree that the three persons of the Trinity are
represented in this icon. Many see Christ as the middle
angel and God the Father on the left. Others see God the
Father in the middle, and Christ on the left. The middle
angel occupies a special place in the icon: it is set
apart not only by being in the centre, but also by a ‘regal’
turn of the head towards the left angel, and by pointing
with its hand towards the cup on the table. Equal among
equals, the middle angel has such expressive power that
it is easily seen as a symbolic representation of God
the Father.
However,
it is equally easily seen that the left hand angel is
also essential: the two other angels lower their heads
towards it and seem to address it. If we then assume that
this left angel is God the Father, the centre one must
represent Christ. It is represented in the colours associated
with Christ: blue and crimson.
Either
way, we have a dialogue between two angels. The Father
turns to his Son and explains the necessity of his Sacrifice;
the Son answers by agreeing to his Father’s wish.
Next
time we look at the icon, we will think about the Eucharistic
symbolism within it.

Lots
of Thanks
Thank
you
On Sea Sunday, the retiring collection raised £95.18p,
which with the tax reclaimable by the Missions to Seafarers
on some donations, probably reaches the round £100.
More

After the mentions in both July and August of those who
keep things so neat at the Old Churchyard, we also thank
Bob Abraham, who has strimmed away quietly all summer.
Thank
you
We both take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent
their good wishes, cards and gifts to help us celebrate

PARKING
Thank you, book lovers
Thank
you to all who gave us books over the last year for the
stall at Rose Queen Day. Thank you also for those who
added - almost over-generously! - to our boxfuls for the
one-off sale on August 4th. As we hoped, the press articles
and the event entry on the village web-site pulled in
quite a few non-parishioners. This sale raised £66.50
which has been passed to our PCC Treasurer for the Fabric
Fund.
At
the last moment, we were given a large number of children’s
books which mostly remained unsold. These have been left
for those attending the Mothers and Tots Group during
August. Those left over are being passed to Derian House,
either for use, or for sale in their charity shop. The
bulk of the remaining book stock has gone to Oxfam - they
appraise books properly and get a good return on them.
A few good hardbacks and good quality paperbacks that
came in between the sales have been tucked away for next
time.
Thank
you to all donors and buyers.

One
of those Newsquiz clippings
“A
walk to counteract seasonal inertia on Christmas day was
cancelled because no-one turned up. The two mile walk
was round Lyme Regis.
The
Chairman of the Lyme Regis Society said ‘This must
be a record - no-one turning up’ but someone else
said: ‘No. We once organised a four mile walk and
no-one came to that.’”
News
from the school.
It is hard to believe another school year has
passed and the start of a new term is upon us. The Governors
of the school will be appointing a new headteacher in
October and will be starting the process in September.
This is a very important time for the school and a task,
heavy with responsibility for the Governors. I would therefore
ask that you remember the school and our Governors in
your prayers that the right person for the task may be
chosen.
We
welcome twenty nine children to our Reception Class and
three new children to other classes in the school. The
term that lies ahead already promises to be challenging
and we will all be doing our best with God's help to rise
to that challenge.
At
the beginning of term, school was gleaming: windows had
been washed, classrooms scrubbed, corridors polished and
everywhere looked clean, tidy and organised. Our thanks
go to Mrs Godfrey and Mrs Van Dijk and their husbands
and Mr Greaves and Oliver who for the good of the school
put so much effort into achieving this!

Holy
Groans …
I’m sure you’ve already heard the story about
the marital argument about who should make the early morning
coffee. The wife apparently argues that her husband should
do it because he gets up first anyway. He retorts that
she’s in charge of the cooking, and so it falls
within her brief; to which her response is that there
is a biblical instruction that men should make the coffee.
Challenged to provide evidence of this, she whips out
a Bible, opens it at the New Testament, and there it is
in black and white: Hebrews.

Triennial
Re-licensing of Readers Ian Wells
Each third year - and this is a third year! -
every Reader in the diocese goes to the Cathedral to receive
back their license from the bishop. He signs every licence
- mine has signatures on it for each of the three year
sequences since I was first licensed in 1984 - and preaches
to the massed Readers. It is quite a sight to see two-third’s
of the nave of the cathedral filled with blue scarves
- around 250 of us, men and women. This time, the re-licensing
service is on Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael and
All Angels, Saturday 29th September. The service nominally
starts at 3.30 pm, but the procession of Readers will
enter from 3.15, so if you want a seat, arrival by 3.00
is strongly advised.

PARISH
JOTTINGS FOR SEPTEMBER 1891.
The
month of August 1891, has been one of the very wettest
of all the wet Augusts we have known. Floods have prevailed,
and in some parts of the country over six inches of rainfall
was noted in two days. The rain has laid the corn, the
winds have shaken out much of the grain, the orchards
have been strewed with fallen fruit, and a good deal of
hay is still ungathered.
The
more things change, the more they stay the same!
